The tape of a facially scarred woman warns us of some unknown danger
that must be stopped. Two altar boys looking for looking to sneak some
of the Communion wine come across the body of a man dressed in angel’s
wings lying in sanctuary of their church. Mack and Flack examine the
body to find he is wearing a bungee jump harness whose cord has been
purposefully cut. Sid processes the corpse and finds a microvideo
recorder imbedded in his chest. The victim was intoxicated and died of a
broken spine. Lindsay manages to decode a data chip found on the angel.
She shows Hawkes and Mac her belief that the dead man and the scarred
woman from the beginning were both trying to win the “Next Internet
Daredevil” competition and its prize of $100,000 (the woman made her
tape to warn the public of the dangers in this competition). Mac, Flack
and Hawkes confirm the rooftop from which our angel was launched from a
bungee slingshot. It is obvious that two accomplices helped with the
stunt- a male who winched the victim back and a female off to the side
filming the event. The victim’s friend TJ confesses to assisting in the
stunt and that the dead man’s girlfriend filmed it. But by examining the
tape they realize that the victim cut the cord himself believing he
would really be able to fly. No crime was committed but drunken
stupidity.
Meanwhile, Detective Valens (of CBS’ “Cold Case”) from Philadelphia
comes to CSI with evidence from a 10 year old murder that has Stella’s
DNA on it. Valens tries to interrogate Stella with the evidence at hand.
Bloody female clothing found buried at the side of a Philly turnpike
that had DNA from Stella and from an unknown male and female. Chemicals
found on the coat indicate that she may have been a photographer. Other
trace elements lead them to believe she may have covered the AIDS
memorial art show in NY a decade earlier. Stella, Danny and Det. Valens
discover that an Erin Yates had covered the art show and her old
employer sends her a box of her stuff, including rolls of undeveloped
film. In the darkroom it becomes clear that the victim had taken many
pictures of an unidentified male. A print develops of an officer
graduating from the police academy- it is clearly Stella. Valens feels
betrayed and believes Stella is involved in this crime. Danny manages to
identify the man from the photos as Garth Bennet. Danny takes Valens to
his home to find his wife, Marylin, runs a foster care facility, but she
says her husband disappeared 10 years earlier. They discover that Erin
Yates is really Mindy Sanchez, a girl who stayed with them as a young
girl- about the same time Stella stayed at their home. Stella remembers
that she had made a blood pact with Mindy in a locket as young girls.
That would explain how her DNA ended up on the clothes of Mindy/ Erin.
Upon examination of the bloody clothing they realize that burns on the
garment were made by the sprockets of a projector. Stella leads them to
an old theatre at which Garth used to work. They quickly realize that a
murder had taken place in the projection booth many years ago, but was
cleaned up by someone- Marylin, the foster mother. Stella puts the
pieces together that Garth had been abusing Mindy and she came back to
murder him years later. Stella manages to find Mindy, now Victoria Page,
and warn her that the next day she would have to come as a cop, but
tonight she came as a sister.
Chief of Detectives Brigham Sinclair and Deputy Inspector Stanton Gerard
hold a press conference in which they announce to reporters that the
NYPD will be looking into how Clay Dobson managed to fall from a rooftop
while under Mac’s Custody. Mac takes his case to Chief Sinclair. Mac
flashes back to that fateful day in which Dobson cuffed himself and
jumped off the rood in an attempt to bring Mac’s career down. Despite
Mac’s many protestations and accusing Sinclair of bending to political
and media pressure, Mac must give up his gun and badge while the
investigation proceeds. On a sidewalk, the unarmed Mac comes face to
face with a distraught man with a gun who blames Mac for killing Dobson,
thereby preventing them from finding the body of his daughter he
believes was murdered by Dobson.
