As Stella, Danny and Lindsay set to investigating a murder on the subway, the subway suddenly starts running. Danny is able to stop it, but not before Stella realizes that this crime and their inadvertent ride was planned by the 333 caller that has been harassing Mac. Meanwhile, Mac is in Chicago searching the Tribune Building to try to find why the caller sent him there. In doing so, he discovers a partially mummified body hanging from the ceiling of abandoned office space. On the wall, written in blood, is a game of hangman, which Mac figures out to mean “coward.”

The Chicago CSI team later discovers that the body was of a white male in his 20’s who was killed about 30 years prior. Mac knows that this body is Bobby Toole. Bobby had killed Mac’s friend’s older brother. All of the clues left by the 333 caller have led up to this. Mac’s friend, Jimmie Davis, had shot Bobby in trying to protect his brother. Mac had been there and couldn’t bring himself to pull the trigger. Mac thinks that Jimmie might be behind the phone calls because he hates him for letting his brother die. Jimmie says that he had nothing to do with it.

Meanwhile, Stella realizes that Drew, the man that had been courting her, might be involved in Mac’s situation. She figures out that he had been using her as a part of his plan to get to Mac. She then compares prints from the gifts Drew had given her to prints found at the different crime scenes. They match. When Stella tells Mac about this, he realizes that Jimmie’s little brother’s name is Andrew. Jimmie wasn’t angry with Mac - Andy was. Mac heads back to New York once he finds out.

The CSI team rushes to Drew’s bistro. While they are searching, Drew abducts Mac and takes him to an abandoned subway station. The rest of the team beings searching for clues about Mac’s location. Meanwhile, Drew has Mac at gunpoint. Any motion will trigger a shot at Mac, and if someone opens the door to the room they are in, that person will be shot as well. Drew explains that he had been there when his older brother was murdered, and he held Mac responsible. He wanted to kill someone that was important to Mac. Later, the CSIs figure out where Mac is and send in Jimmie to try to talk Drew out of hurting anyone. Jimmie, wearing a bulletproof vest, enters to room and gets shot. Drew runs to his brother and Mac takes that opportunity to disarm Drew, and he is captured.
